Dingoden Family Outback Yapper

Welcome to our Family blog. It will try to capture the various asundry activities of our mundane lives, but with an attempt at making it seem not quite so mundane.

School Time -- Math

We thought we'd share with you a little bit about our
school time with math.

We have a wonderful math curriculum called Right
Start Math. It is very interactive. We start off with
a math song... Yellow is the sun, 6 is 5 and 1; Why is the
Sky so blue, 7 is 5 and 2. Then there are lots of different
games and activities. We almost always use the abacus
and tally sticks to identify numbers and count.

The past few lessons have been talking about parallel and
perpendicular lines. I know Logan "gets it" because the
other day when we were camping, Daddy said "we should
park the trucks parallel so that we can put the tarp between
them." Logan overheard and said excitedly, "I know what
parallel means!" When I asked him what it meant, he was
able to explain perfectly.

We've also been talking about squares, rectangles and
triangles. Today's game involved the geoboard (that Logan
is holding in the picture above.) He liked it so much that he
asked to play with the geoboard for the rest of quiet time
and made the design below.

Delenn always comes in (and I mean always!) and says,
"I want to do math!" Above, Delenn is using the abacus to
count out three beads. She finds the activities fun too!
Sometimes I switch back and forth between Logan and
Delenn, taking turns at the activities and sometimes (like
today) I work with each of them separately.
